There is a better approach with SmartRunway® and SmartLanding®
A recent Flight Safety Foundation study found that airline pilots “with overwhelming frequency elect to continue an unstable approach rather than go around”. While obviously not all unstable approaches are dangerous - unstable approaches can ultimately end in incidents that could have easily been prevented, and which could cause injury to passengers and crew, as well as damage and delays.
These incidents include long landings, hard landings and runway excursions. While the last decade has seen a noticeable reduction in the number of non-fatal and fatal accidents involving the worldwide commercial jet aircraft fleet, runway excursions continue to remain prevalent, accounting for approximately a quarter of all incidents and accidents in air transport, and 96 per cent of all runway accidents.
The next evolution of Honeywell’s Runway Awareness and Advisory System, SmartRunway and SmartLanding are software options for the Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System (EGPWS) which increase flight crew situational awareness during taxi, take-off, approach and landing,
Honeywell’s SmartLanding promotes stabilized approaches to mitigate the risk of long or hard landings and ultimately runway excursions. SmartLanding constantly monitors aircraft data, including altitude, speed, vertical glide path positioning, crosschecking this data with the stabilized approach criteria during the final approach. In essence, SmartLanding ensures the aircraft is on target speed, positioned and configured to land and touch down in the defined runway touchdown zone – therefore minimizing the need to ‘go-around’.
Key benefits of SmartRunway and SmartLanding:
- Decreases the risk of runway incursions and excursions
- Increases runway situational awareness and more stabilized approaches
- Supports ‘heads-up’ operations with aural advisories
- Supports ‘quiet’ cockpits with visual advisories
- Configurable to fit operating environment requirements
- Inhibit switches are optional
- Certified for most Airbus and Boeing aircraft, as well as many business jets
- Simple software installation
